Tips For Keeping Your Children Healthy and Happy

By

Most parents care about making sure that their children are both healthy and happy, but how does a parent go about doing this?

Obesity is on the rise in the United States, and children are becoming fatter and fatter. Who is to blame for this? Is it the parents for not teaching their children healthy eating and exercising habits? Is it the school's fault for providing vending machines full of fatty, calorie laden foods, and sugary soft drinks? There can not really be one specific answer to this question. Parents can not follow their children every where they go to ensure that they are eating the right things and making the right choices.

All we can do is teach them. We can teach our children from a young age to eat a variety of healthy foods. We can't deprive our children of junk food completely, but junk food should only be a rare treat. Teach them that vegetables are good and healthy foods, and that they can also be yummy to eat. Teach them to make healthy choices about what they put into their body.

A lot of schools are changing their old ways and introducing healthy foods into vending machines. Some schools give children the choice of junk food, or healthy foods, while others have completely stopped providing junk food. Show your kids what junk food can do to their bodies and the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and lean.

Believe it, or not, health can also play a big role in your child's happiness. Overweight children are typically not as happy as thin children are. This is coming from first hand experience.

Today's kids are obsessed with video games, and tv. What are children doing while playing video games and watching TV? They are sitting on their butt, which requires no exercise. If your child really loves their video games, or TV, set a limit for them. Only allow them to play, or watch for so long every day, an hour, or two, maybe. Push them to go outdoors and play with their siblings, or neighborhood children.

Make it a family event by doing things together with your child such as playing outdoor games with them, going for walks, or riding bikes. This shows your child what fun it can be to get outdoors and do things, and how much better his, or her body will feel when getting exercise.

If you teach your child these healthy habits at a young age, they are more likely to stick with them throughout life. Parents are a child's biggest example, they look up to you and they learn from you. Being a parent isn't just about teaching them their ABC's; it's about teaching them life long habits.

Self esteem impacts everyone's life, young, or old. Children develop their personality and their self esteem at a very young age.

As a parent, you can help your child develop a healthy self esteem by praising them. When they do something good, tell them what a great job they did. Make them feel good about themselves. Be positive and show them how much they are loved.

Even when a child is not behaving and needs to be punished, be sure to let them know that you still love them after the punishment is over.

Do not call your child names like "stupid" , or "dumb". These words can stick with a child forever, and you don't want to be the cause of your child's low self esteem and lack of happiness. If your child got a bad grade, don't call them names, even if it is done in a joking way. Try to come up with a positive way of talking to them about it. Negative words give negative feelings.

Show your child how wonderful and unique they are, and that you love them unconditionally.
