What to expect when getting a tattoo
By Deanna419
Most people are apprehensive about getting their first tattoo. After making the big decision of what they want to have tattooed on their body, most people wonder what to expect when they go into the tattoo shop to get their first tattoo. Here is a little preview of what you should expect when you get your tattoo.
- Most artists or shops will require you to sign a consent form. This form is for your safety and theirs.
- Once the artist has the design ready for you, he will shave the spot where you want the tattoo to be put on your body (don't worry, they are pros at this, too!)
- They will then spray your skin with an alcohol solution and put a traced outline of your tattoo onto your skin (unless they are doing the design freehand).
- He will then get the tattoo machine ready, he should show you that the needle is taken fresh from the wrapper so you know that it is brand new. He will put out little cups of different colored inks to get them ready for your tattoo.
- Depending on where you are having the tattoo done, the first hit from the tattoo machine will hurt the most. He will stop every few minutes to wipe off any excess ink and/or blood from your skin.
- Throughout the tattoo, usually when changing colors, he will spray your skin with a green anti-bacterial soap solution to keep the area clean.
- When finished, he will clean the area with the anti-bacterial soap and then apply an ointment to the fresh tattoo. He should ask you how you like the tattoo and will then cover it with saran wrap.
Before you leave, he should also give you instructions on how to take care of your tattoo and what sort of things to look for in case of infection.
Remember, if you have any concerns or questions about your tattoo, ask your artist! They are there to make sure you are happy and to answer any questions for you.
When the tattoo is finished you will be very happy with yourself for going through with it and you will be very proud of your first tattoo.
**Be careful though, they are addictive!

Hmm, I didn't think saran wrap was suggested anymore because it doesn't breathe enough. Mine was wrapped with a paper towel. It is an open wound so air is good. The ointment provides the protective barrier. (But not vaseoline - it can draw the ink out).... AFAIK anyway.
A paper towel? Wow I've never seen that. I would think that would soak up the ink and stick to the wound? My last tattoo was in February and saran was used.

This is really good. I've always wondered what it will be like to get a tattoo and on a scale of 1 - 10: What the pain was like. This Hub has given me more insight. Regards.
